Sunnen's honing machines cover a wide range of sizes, from small to large diameters, and various production scales, from high-mix processing to mass production lines. This page presents the strengths of Sunnen's products, its lineup, usage case examples, and its support structure.
The SV series features designs that use servo control to automatically adjust honing stone rotation speeds and reciprocal movement. These machines produce the uniform cross-hatching essential for lubrication on the interiors of holes. They support both short stroke and dwell processing.
Sunnen's honing machines use servo control and automatic measurement to mechanically manage processing conditions. Processes which previously relied on experienced operators can be automated to maintain consistent processing accuracy, unaffected by the operator's skill level. These machines also achieve a high level of precision in high-mix, low-volume production and when processing unusually-shaped workpieces, such as hydraulic cylinders.
Sunnen has a full range of models, including vertical, horizontal, and dedicated tube models. They cover all kinds of sizes, from small diameters on the order of ⌀5 mm to large diameters of up to ⌀1,200 mm. They have a track record of use in applications that require precise internal diameter finishing, such as aircraft components, hydraulic devices, and automobile components.
Device capabilities and manufacturer support requirements vary from business to business, differing for precision components, large components and heavy industry, and component repair and processing.
We have carefully selected the honing machines that are best suited to companies based on the features and challenges of their varied businesses, freeing them from needing to rely on specific operators. Please use the information on this site in your comparisons and deliberations.

These horizontal honing machines are specially designed for the processing of small- and medium-diameter components. Unlike the SV-15 (for large components) and the HTS (for long pipes), the SH6000 was designed with particular attention to easy set-up changes. It also provides smooth support in worksites that do high-mix processing, where tools and processing conditions vary from product to product.

This machine has a processing capacity of up to 1,600 cm³/h and is highly suited to mass production lines that perform large-scale, continuous processing of long tubes with identical specifications. It has automatic rotation speed adjustment functions and automatic hole shape correction functions, so it can maintain consistent accuracy. The expandable structure can process holes in increments of 4 m or 6 m, and lengths can be extended afterward. It also flexibly supports future processing line changes.
In this usage case example, the SV-1015 was used in the manufacturing of hydraulic pumps for aerospace use. These hydraulic pumps, vital for flight, required processing for nine holes, and there was no room for error, with even micron-level mistakes being unacceptable. The honing machines that the company had been using had difficulty keeping each hole within the tolerance. Processing nine holes required polished skills and was an iterative process that took a great deal of time, as measurement was performed after each processing step.
Following the introduction of the SV-1015, the company was able to achieve target dimensions for all nine holes. It reached a high processing capacity of 2.21 Cpk with almost no operator involvement. A customer, seeing the high quality of the processing, placed a batch order for five years of products. In this deployment example, the new model improved the manufacturing company's product quality and earned the trust of its customers.
This usage case example concerns fuse pins, components used in the aerospace industry. Fuse pins are normally used to secure jet engines to wings but to break away in emergency situations, preventing damage to the aircraft body and fires. To serve both the roles of securing and releasing engines, the fuse pins needed a tight 5-to-7-micron internal diameter tolerance and surface roughness. However, there were limits to both the processing times and production capacity achievable with manual honing machines.
The introduction of the SV-1000 reduced processing times per part from 40 minutes to 10 minutes, cutting cycle time by 75%. The company went from being able to manufacture 9 parts per day to being able to manufacture 40. This case example is a demonstration of how consistent processing accuracy through CNC can continuously meet strict tolerance and surface quality requirements.
Sunnen has a subsidiary in India, so it can handle inquiries locally. Its global service team also performs on-site troubleshooting and repair, along with offering on-site training for operators.
Sunnen's machines are guaranteed for 3 years of use or processing times of 6,000 spindle hours, whichever is shorter. The company has a policy of continuing to provide parts and perform repairs even for models which have already been discontinued.

BS-VI standards and growing EV demand are driving unprecedented needs for precision machining.
While the "overseas components + local assembly" model keeps initial costs low, design mismatches and unclear accountability create long-term risks.
Integrated management from design to assembly ensures consistent machining accuracy regardless of operator, minimizing material loss, accelerating ROI, and building the foundation for global trust.

This honing machine synchronizes stroke and stone expansion in 0.1 μm increments, enabling precision honing of holes as small as 3 mm in diameter and 80 mm deep, even in hard materials.
Automatic electronic control and made-to-order jigs reproduce the techniques of veteran operators.
These honing machines eliminate deviations in the manufacturing of precision components such as control valves while also reducing personnel costs.
