Rottler Manufacturing is a US-based manufacturer of engine rebuilding and remanufacturing machinery. Its H80 Series honing machines are designed primarily for cylinder and liner honing. Rottler provides machine manuals, training resources, parts support, and service-request channels, and its H85 Series documentation also describes remote training and support through an internet connection. For buyers in India, the local dealer, on-site service coverage, spare-parts availability, and installation arrangements should be confirmed before purchase.
Rottler's H85A and H85AX are CNC vertical honing machines for engine cylinders and liners. Both models support bore diameters from approximately ⌀48 mm to ⌀186–187 mm and cylinders up to 432 mm long. Functions include programmable crosshatch control, roughing and finishing load sensing, plateau finishing, stone feed and retraction, and lower-bore crash protection. The main difference is positioning: the H85A uses manual X-axis positioning, while the H85AX adds a servo-driven X axis for automatic hole-to-hole movement.

We've presented some of the key features of each manufacturer. Drawing on publicly available information, we have reviewed over a hundred varieties of honing machines and organized suggestions by business type, such as precision component suppliers, heavy industry companies, and repair subcontractors. Which manufacturer suits you best will depend on your bore diameter, production volume, and support requirements, so please use the articles below as one reference point when comparing and considering honing machines.
Honing machine selection in India
The right honing machine is the one that can repeatedly produce an accepted bore under your actual factory conditions. Compare the complete process—machine, tooling, abrasives, coolant, gauging, automation and service—not the machine specification alone.
A meaningful comparison starts with the bore and the production target, not the machine catalogue. Give each supplier the same application data:
Ask for a complete process proposal that identifies the tool, abrasive, fixture, coolant, filtration and gauge—not just spindle power and diameter range.
Decision rule: if two quotations are based on different incoming conditions or inspection methods, they are not yet comparable.
Match the process to part geometry and production behaviour:
Decision rule: use a trial on actual parts when more than one configuration appears suitable. Orientation alone does not prove process capability.
Calculate automation around the full operating cycle: load, locate, clamp, hone, gauge, compensate, unload and change over. A quoted honing time that excludes handling and inspection will overstate output.
For mixed batches or frequent product changes, a semi-automatic machine with good fixturing, recipe control and in-process guidance can deliver a better return than a fully automated line. Higher-volume, stable production gives more value to automatic loading, post-process gauging, tool-wear compensation, reject segregation and data capture.
Also check who will set up the process on each shift. Automation should reduce variation and repetitive work without making routine recovery dependent on a remote specialist.
Decision rule: automate the proven bottleneck, and specify interfaces for future automation if demand is expected to grow.
Do not order an imported machine against a generic “India voltage” assumption. Indian public references use 50 Hz and show three-phase low-voltage values of 400 V or 415 V depending on the document and context. Record the actual supply at the machine location and obtain the supplier’s permitted voltage range.
Decision rule: treat utilities, environmental limits and compliance documents as selection criteria—not commissioning-stage details.
Compare the cost per accepted bore. The purchase price is only one part of that number. Build an INR-based cost model that includes freight and import costs, rigging, foundation work, electrical adaptation, coolant and filtration, gauges, fixtures, mandrels, abrasives, training, maintenance, planned spares, scrap, rework and downtime.
Ask each supplier to support its tool-life and abrasive-consumption estimates with trial data or comparable applications. Then test the calculation at your current volume and at a realistic growth volume. A faster machine can still cost more per accepted part if it needs frequent tooling changes, creates unstable quality or waits for imported spares.
Decision rule: annualise capital and operating costs, then divide by accepted output—not total machine cycles.
“Service available in India” is too broad for a production-risk decision. Ask what support reaches your plant, how quickly, and with which skills.
Decision rule: judge support at your plant location and for your process. A national office does not automatically mean that the required part or application specialist is locally available.
Run the trial with production material, heat treatment and a realistic spread of incoming bore conditions. Agree the acceptance matrix before testing:
Carry the same criteria from the factory acceptance test to site acceptance in India, and retain the raw measurement data and approved process settings.
Decision rule: do not approve the machine on one best-looking sample. Approve a repeatable process and a measurable handover.
Attach the drawing, representative pre-honed samples, production volumes and factory utility data. Ask every supplier to return the proposed process chain, machine configuration, tooling package, acceptance plan and India service scope in the same format.
BS-VI standards and growing EV demand are driving unprecedented needs for precision machining.
While the "overseas components + local assembly" model keeps initial costs low, design mismatches and unclear accountability create long-term risks.
Integrated management from design to assembly ensures consistent machining accuracy regardless of operator, minimizing material loss, accelerating ROI, and building the foundation for global trust.

This honing machine synchronizes stroke and stone expansion in 0.01 μm increments, enabling precision honing of holes as small as 3 mm in diameter and 80 mm deep, even in hard materials.
Automatic electronic control and made-to-order jigs reproduce the techniques of veteran operators.
These honing machines eliminate deviations in the manufacturing of precision components such as control valves while also reducing personnel costs.
